Perhaps not quite as big as the Yankee 'Centennials', the 81 class locos are still rather massive units. Only marginally smaller than the NR Class locos. They certainly dwarf the three 48 Class locos the 8131 is leading.

This westbound train consists of empty grain wagons, approaching Temora, NSW. Considering the great yields this year (despite many crops being downgraded to feed quality due to a rain interupted harvest), this train will no doubt be heading back East to the ports rather soon.

For their size and power they are actually relatively quiet. I think you would hear the 48 class locos before the 81 class. Best bet is to go on YouTube and search "81 class locomotive". Youtube links can be problematic sometimes, particularly when in different countries, so best to search for yoruself. There's plenty of videos to choose from (more 81 class than 48 class, unless you like model trains).
Hopefully this link works for a train I was on (but not me filming - I think I was in the carriage in front of the guy filming)... [link]
if it doesn't work, search for "48 class around Bethungra, pt1." and then part 2!

They are indeed pretty cool. From what I can gather off the net, they are almost exclusively used by Pacific National, operating in southeastern states of Australia.

No. 8131 has been in service since 1984, so it's still going strong 27 years later. 84 of them were built, and 83 of them are still in service (one was destroyed in a fatal accident). They are reported to be extremely reliable... Methinks they will be around for some time yet. With cab/controls at each end they are also quite versatile - particularly on branch lines where turntables are usually lacking.

Trains and landscapes do go well togther. We've got plenty of landscape, and plenty of tracks through nice landscape - I love going for a drive, love trains, and love photography. So no surprise I can often be found happily watching trains (with camera in hand, of course) in a scenic location =)

The distortion of the heat along the top of the train against all the trees in the background is so cool :O

Glad to see you back online ^^
Hope you've been keeping well :)

Yeah, heat shimmer can be a cool thing, but it can also be annoying at times too...

Been rather busy lately, but somehow there is always time for photography! I might take a few shots at the Reining show this weekend.

You should get Bully ready for the 10km fun endurance ride. Would do him the world of good, and you would no doubt enjoy it too =)
